The FBI is reporting that 59 law enforcement officers have been feloniously killed in the line of duty so far this year, a 51% spike compared to the 39 deaths at this time last year. The 59 officer deaths mean about one officer has been murdered every five days this year, the head of FBI Boston's division told the Herald on Monday.

The number of serious crimes reported to El Paso police in 2020 declined by 18% compared to the previous year, continuing a remarkable trend, the FBI reported this week. Violent crime reported to police — murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault — fell by 12% last year. Reported property crimes — burglary, larceny-theft, auto theft and arson — fell by 19%.

Coronavirus was the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths for law enforcement officers in the United States during the first half of 2021, a report released by a nonprofit organization shows. The report, issued by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, revealed that 71 officers died from coronavirus from the beginning of the year until June 30.

Three Albuquerque police officers were shot and another was injured while responding to a robbery, authorities said Thursday. Police Chief Harold Medina said one of the officers was hit in the chest above his bulletproof vest and was listed in critical condition. One officer was shot in the arm and another was saved when he was struck in the vest.

Two El Paso Police Department officers were injured in a crash in the Lower Valley on Monday night. Both of the injured officers are two-year veterans of the department. The El Paso City Council unanimously voted on Tuesday to approve a deal with the Public Service Board to transfer 306 acres of land in Northeast El Paso for the construction of the city’s new fire and police academy. It will be a joint facility for both departments, including a fire department headquarters and a fire vehicle maintenance and logistics center.
